Progressive lenses, the optimal lenses for presbyopia, efficient vision correction for age-related focusing issues.

As we age, our eyes naturally change, leading to a common condition known as presbyopia.

This can make it challenging to focus on objects up close, affecting daily activities like reading or using a smartphone.

For those with a prescription for distance vision, the best solution to correct this eye condition is getting a pair of progressive lenses, and here’s why.

What is presbyopia?

Presbyopia is an age-related universal condition that typically emerges in adults around their 40s.

It’s important to note that it can affect everyone to some degree as they age, even those who have had perfect vision their entire lives.

It’s a natural part of the eye’s aging process, characterized by a gradual loss of the eye’s ability to focus on nearby objects.

As we age, the lens in our eye, which is normally flexible, becomes stiffer and loses some of its ability to change shape and correct vision.

This change in flexibility causes a gradual shift in focusing ability, which is crucial for clear close-up vision.

Common symptoms of presbyopia include difficulty in reading small print, the need to hold reading materials at arm’s length, eye strain, and headaches when engaging in activities that require near vision.

These symptoms often start out mild and gradually worsen over time.

Lenses for presbyopia

There are different lens options to tackle presbyopia.

Reading glasses are a straightforward and widely used option. They are particularly effective for tasks like reading or close-up tasks, providing clear near vision.

However, they need to be removed for distance vision, which can be a nuisance or those who frequently switch between activities.

Bifocal lenses* (and other multifocal lenses) present a more integrated solution.

These are designed with two distinct zones: the lower part for near vision and the upper part for distance vision. They have a clear demarcation between these zones.

While bifocals are practical for those who need both near and distance vision correction, the visible lines on the lenses can be a visual distraction for many users.

Progressive lenses, on the other hand, offer a seamless experience for those suffering from presbyopia.

They eliminate the visible line found in bifocals, offering a gradient of varying lens powers for near, intermediate, and distance vision.

*SmartBuyGlasses does not offer bifocal lenses.

Why progressive lenses are the best choice

Progressive lenses work particularly well for addressing presbyopia, offering several distinct advantages:

  • Tailored for age-related vision changes: Progressive lenses are specifically designed to address the gradual loss of near-focusing ability associated with presbyopia, providing a seamless visual experience that aligns with the natural progression of the condition.

  • All-in-one lens: These lenses offer a complete range of vision correction, from near to distance, in just one pair. This is particularly beneficial for presbyopia sufferers who experience various vision issues.

  • Adaptable to active lifestyles: They are ideal for people with active lifestyles who need a versatile vision solution that adapts to different activities, from reading and computer work to outdoor activities.

  • Reduced eyestrain and headaches: By providing natural vision at all distances, progressive lenses can reduce the eyestrain and headaches often associated with presbyopia, especially when switching focus between near and distance vision.

DID YOU KNOW?

Regular eye exams are crucial for those with presbyopia, as the condition progressively worsens with age, requiring adjustments in the strength of the progressive lens to ensure optimal vision at all times.

What to expect when switching to progressive lenses

Transitioning to progressive lenses involves a period of adjustment, but the benefits are substantial.

Initially, you should learn to navigate the different vision zones by slightly adjusting your head position rather than just moving your eyes.

For those experiencing symptoms of presbyopia and who want to wear progressive glasses, it’s required to obtain the correct prescription from a qualified eye doctor.

An eye care professional can provide expert advice on the suitability and adjustment of progressive lenses tailored to your specific visual needs.

Our in-house opticians can also help you with any doubts or questions you might have.

Remember, the key to maintaining optimal eye health and the best possible vision is regular check-ups and following professional guidance.

If you’re in the market for eyeglasses and need vision correction for both near, intermediate and far distances, progressive lenses might be the perfect solution for you.

Maybe you’d already settled on getting a pair, but now you find yourself faced with a choice among them, premium or deluxe?

In this article, we’ll explore the differences between premium and deluxe progressive lenses and help you determine which option is best for your unique needs.

What are progressive lenses?

diagram of progressive lenses
diagram of progressive lenses

Progressive lenses, also known as varifocal or multifocal lenses, are a remarkable advancement in eyewear technology that contain three different prescriptions.

They offer a seamless transition from distance vision to intermediate and near vision without the visible line found in traditional bifocals.

Each progressive lens has three distinct viewing areas. You look through the top part for distance vision, the middle for intermediate vision, and the bottom of the lens when you need to see something up close.

These variable focus lenses offer a smooth and natural transition between distance vision, intermediate vision (such as computer screens), and near vision, providing clear and comfortable vision at all distances.

Progressive lenses cater particularly well to individuals with presbyopia, a common age-related vision condition. Presbyopia affects our ability to focus on close objects as we get older, making it challenging to read or perform other tasks that require near vision.

Progressives are a popular choice for those who develop presbyopia on top of existing vision impairments, as they eliminate the need to carry two pairs of glasses and switch between them throughout the day.

Premium progressive lenses

Premium progressive lenses are our entry level range of progressives, with four lens index options available at various price points. These lenses have a design that provides clear vision at a distance, intermediate range, and up-close.

The most standard progressive lenses in the collection come with scratch-resistant and anti-reflective coatings, two features that are also found in the options higher up the scale. The “comfort” version has added UV 400 protection.

The two options on the upper end of the premium scale also have UV400, as well as superhydrophobic coating and an aspheric shape. This shape makes them thinner and lighter than other versions, with 1.67 and 1.74 index versions available.

Deluxe progressive lenses

premium and deluxe progressive lenses comparison
premium and deluxe progressive lenses comparison

Deluxe progressive lenses are a step up from our premium options, offering a superior visual experience. These lenses are tailored to meet your unique vision needs and preferences, providing several advantages.

There are three options available within the deluxe range. All three of them have the features of the most complete option from the premium range, but are equipped with even more add-ons on top.

Impact X protection comes as standard on all three deluxe options. This impact-resistant coating reinforces the lenses, so they can handle more adventurous lifestyles and are more forgiving when the odd mishap occurs.

Deluxe progressive lenses differ from their premium counterparts the most in one key aspect. Their viewing area is 30% wider than that of premium lenses.

This provides greater comfort, especially for near and intermediate vision, as these zones are enlarged the most noticeably.

This extra space maximizes the smooth transition when switching from one viewing area to the next, and can reduce visual fatigue and peripheral distortion while wearing your glasses.

DID YOU KNOW?

French engineer Bernard Maitenaz invented the first progressive lens in 1959.

Which ones are best for you?

The choice between premium and deluxe progressive lenses ultimately depends on your individual needs, preferences, and budget.

If any of the following criteria apply to you, premium progressives may be the best option:

  • You have a limited budget and want a functional solution.
  • You are new to progressive lenses and want to try them out.
  • Your prescription is relatively simple, and you don’t have specific visual demands.

On the other hand, you may have greater or more specific demands from your progressive glasses. The following factors might make deluxe lenses the most suitable choice for you:

  • You value visual clarity and comfort above all else.
  • You want the most natural vision possible from your lenses.
  • You have a complex prescription or specific visual needs.
  • You want a sleek and aesthetically pleasing pair of eyeglasses.

Ultimately, your optometrist or eyewear specialist can provide invaluable guidance in selecting the right progressive lenses for your unique situation.

They can assess your prescription, visual habits, and lifestyle to recommend the most suitable option, ensuring you enjoy clear and comfortable vision at all distances.

Both premium and deluxe progressive lenses have their merits, but deluxe options offer a superior visual experience, especially for those with complex prescriptions or specific visual demands.

Investing in your visual comfort and clarity can significantly enhance your quality of life and overall satisfaction with your eyewear. If you’d like an expert’s opinion on choosing the right progressive lenses for you, you can ask our opticians.

How Progressive Lenses Can Help You Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

How Progressive Lenses Can Help You Keep Your New Year's Resolutions

As 2023 draws to a close, there’s a palpable buzz in the air—a collective anticipation for the fresh start of a new year.

We begin to reflect on our past twelve months, considering victories, lessons learned, and moments cherished.

Amidst this retrospective glance, a forward-looking gaze emerges—a contemplation of possibilities, aspirations, and the annual tradition of setting resolutions.

It’s a time when we are filled with hope and eager to embrace the new year ahead. Many of us fill our resolution list with things like adopting healthier habits, pursuing passions, reading more books, traveling, and saving more.

We all start the year with an earnest desire to uphold these pledges, yet history whispers tales of abandoned gym memberships, half-read books, and neglected intentions.

What if, amidst these well-intentioned aspirations, you had a steadfast companion –  a partner-in-crime, if you will – to keep you on track.

In 2024, let progressive lenses be the tool to prevent you from making excuses and help you in reaching your goals.

What are progressive lenses?

Progressive lenses, also known as multifocal lenses, are a marvel in the realm of eyewear. They offer a seamless solution for vision correction at varying distances.

Unlike traditional bifocal lenses with distinct segments for near and distance vision, progressive lenses boast a gradual transition between these zones.

Crafted with a smooth gradient of lens powers, they cater to multiple vision needs—allowing wearers to see clearly at various distances without the stark divisions of bifocals or trifocals.

These lenses accommodate the needs for reading, intermediate, and distance vision, providing wearers with a more natural and continuous visual experience, whether it’s focusing on a book, computer screen, kettlebells, or admiring a distant landscape.

How can progressive lenses help me stay fit?

Depending on the type of activity, progressive lenses can be beneficial for exercises that involve a range of distances or varying focal points.

For instance, progressive lenses can be quite helpful during a gym workout, where you might switch between using a treadmill (distance vision) and checking your phone or watching a screen for workout guidance (near vision).

They offer a seamless transition between different vision zones, allowing wearers to maintain clarity without switching between multiple glasses.

It’s always advisable to consult with an eye care professional to determine the most suitable eyewear for specific exercise routines based on your individual needs and preferences.

Can I read with progressive lenses?

So you’ve made a resolution to read more books. It’s a commitment to enrich the soul and expand the horizons of knowledge.

This pledge isn’t just about the sheer number of books but about carving out moments for introspection, discovery, and the sheer joy of immersing oneself in storytelling.

Reading with progressive lenses is quite common, as the lower portion of the lens is dedicated to close-up tasks like reading. You can comfortably focus on close-range activities without switching to separate reading glasses

When you’re reading, tilt your chin slightly downward to look through the lower portion of the lenses, allowing you to comfortably focus on the text without straining your eyes.

Take the stress out of travel

Maybe you’re an over-packer, or perhaps you only bring the necessities; either way, progressive lenses eliminate the hassle of packing and switching between multiple pairs of glasses.

Whether admiring distant landscapes, reading maps or guidebooks, or checking information on our phones, we often encounter scenarios that demand clear vision at different distances while traveling.

With progressive lenses, you can seamlessly transition between these activities without swapping glasses. This versatility ensures you can enjoy the sights and activities fully without compromising visual clarity or convenience.

In 2024, enjoy a vacation where the sights aren’t blurred, the maps aren’t cryptic hieroglyphics, and the missed wonders aren’t part of the travel saga.

It’s the magic of having the right glasses. A pair that acts as your trusty sidekick, decoding every street sign, menu item, and museum plaque.

Spend more wisely

Deciding to save money as a New Year’s resolution is all about becoming the master of coins, the sultan of savings, and a financial champ.

This resolution becomes a journey of conscientious choices, a dance between budgeting and aspirations, aiming not just for frugality but for financial freedom.

Investing in a pair of progressive lenses can save you money over time. Firstly, they eliminate the need for multiple pairs of glasses.

Instead of purchasing separate glasses for reading, distance vision, and intermediate tasks, progressive lenses reduce the cost of multiple frames and lenses.

Their versatility means you don’t have to constantly switch between different pairs of glasses, reducing the risk of misplacing or damaging additional pairs, which could incur replacement costs.

While the initial investment in progressive lenses might be higher than a single-vision lens, their multifunctionality and long-term utility can lead to cost savings by minimizing the need for multiple purchases and replacements over time.

Stay on top of your 2024 resolutions

Staying on top of your New Year’s resolutions requires attention, determination, and consistency.

It’s not just about making grand declarations on January 1st but about cultivating habits and routines that sustain your goals throughout the year.

Progressive lenses aren’t just for clever vision; they’re your accomplice in conquering goals. With them, you’ve got a constant reminder to stay focused on your resolutions. They’re like your visual cheerleader, nudging you to keep your eyes on the prize.

So, as you stride through 2024, let your resolutions be your destination, and let those progressive lenses be the superpower that keeps your vision sharp and your goals in sight. Happy New Year!

The Best Frames for Progressive Lenses

The Best Frames for Progressive Lenses

So, you’ve only been using distance glasses and now up-close objects are becoming less clear than they used to be?

Or, maybe you always had reading glasses but now you’re struggling to see road signs while driving?

Whatever the reason, you’re in need of glasses for both reading and distance and you’re probably thinking ‘two pairs of glasses sounds like a hassle.’

First, imagine a drumroll please, because we have the solution… progressive lenses

Once you’ve visited your eye doctor, if they think it’s suitable, they will prescribe to you progressive lenses. Then, it’s time for the fun part; choosing the best frame style!

What type of frame is best for progressive lenses?

Firstly, what are they? Progressive lenses are a multifocal lens with three different prescriptions – near, intermediate, and distance.

As there are three prescriptions within one lens, each prescription is located in a different section of the lens.

The precision of this lens design means that some frame shapes are better suited for the job than others to give you clear and comfortable vision.

The ideal lens height is between 28 – 34mm.

So, if the frame style is too wide, too narrow, or an irregular shape, you will be uncomfortable trying to look through the correct part of the lens.

Ignoring the technicalities, frame style can also be influenced by your face shape. At the end of the day, it’s whatever you feel comfortable in.

However, certain styles can look especially flattering on certain shapes so you may want to consider this when choosing the frames for your progressives.

So without further adieu, we’ve compiled some of the best glasses frames for progressive lenses to make your life that much easier.

flatlay of two pairs of tortoiseshell glasses
flatlay of two pairs of tortoiseshell glasses

Round glasses

First on the list are round glasses, which are one of the most ideal shapes for progressive lenses.

Progressive lenses work great when your glasses are really close to your eyes and thankfully, round glasses typically sit rather snug on the bridge of your nose.

Round glasses exude eccentric and quirky vibes and have a rather studious charm.

Disclaimer: they may not actually make you any smarter but you’ll certainly look it.

Sorry, we could not find the following product IDs in our database: 414351. Please check and use correct values.

Square glasses

Next on the list of best frames for progressive lenses: square. Like its rounder counterpart, this style has a deeper lens area.

This is great because all three prescriptions fit with ease making it very comfortable for you to seamlessly transition between the three distances.

Square glasses mean business. You’ll give off a very organized and practical vibe.

Oval glasses

For the same reasons as round, oval glasses are another great option for progressive lenses.

The deeper lens area and where they sit on your face work great to accommodate the three prescriptions.

This style is a bit more subtle so if you’re more lowkey then these frames are for you.

Don’t mistake subtle for boring though. People will see you and think “creative and mature.”

Progressive lenses: styles to avoid

Just as there are some great frame shapes for progressive lenses, there are some styles that are not so ideal.

We want you to get the most out of your progressive glasses, so here are some styles that are best to avoid.

  • Cat-eye
  • Oversized
  • Narrow

At any other time, of course, you can never go wrong with a timeless cat-eye or noughties oversized look.

But in terms of what’s best for your progressive lenses, these shapes can affect how you see through the three prescriptions.

Cat-eyes and narrow styles won’t provide enough lens space at the bottom which will affect the viewing area for your near vision.

Should you fit some cat-eye frames with progressive lenses, you might convey Old Hollywood style, but you won’t be able to read your novel clearly.

As for oversized, having too much lens space affects where the three distances are fitted, which in turn affects where you need to look.

You may find it uncomfortable trying to look through the correct part of the lens.

Best frames for progressive lenses

With that, if you don’t like rounder frames, go for the square, and vice versa.

We have so many styles to choose from that range from affordable to designer, so rest assured you will find something to suit your personality and budget.

Style is important, however, getting the most out of your progressive lenses and being comfortable when you look through the lenses is key.

So keep in mind those styles that are best to avoid.

When you’re ready to buy your pair of progressive glasses, you’ll have considered the best glasses shapes, your face shape, and naturally, your personal style.

The next step is using our Virtual Try-On tool to see how they’ll fit from the comfort of your home.

So sit back, relax, virtually try some glasses on and then provide us with your prescription and we’ll take care of the rest.

Making the switch to progressive lenses is a significant step towards a more natural and comfortable vision experience.

If your optician or optometrist has prescribed or suggested progressive lenses, it means you could really benefit from them on a daily basis.

Progressive lenses (also called multifocal lenses or varifocal lenses) offer a gradient of vision for near, intermediate, and far distances, all in the same lens – with no visible line between different prescription powers!

Of course, you may need some time to adjust to these new lenses at the start. Please know that this is completely normal.

The brain and eyes are adapting to a new way of seeing, and like any adjustment, it requires a bit of patience and practice.

The adjustment period of new progressive lenses

The adjustment period to progressive lenses varies from person to person, ranging from a few days to a couple of weeks.

During this time, it’s common to experience some initial challenges.

As your eyes get used to the gradient zones of the lenses, you might notice that your vision feels unusual.

This often includes blurry vision when shifting focus between objects at different distances, such as when moving your gaze from near to far objects or vice versa.

Tips for getting used to progressive lenses

Here are some progressive glasses tips to help you in your gradual transition:

tips on how to adapt to progressive lenses
tips on how to adapt to progressive lenses

Start in a familiar environment

To effectively adjust to progressive lenses, it’s recommended to start in a familiar environment.

Begin by wearing your new lenses in the comfort and safety of your own home, where you can navigate and adapt at your own pace.

Engage in familiar tasks such as reading a book or watching television.

These activities are excellent for gradually getting accustomed to the progressive lens gradient, as they allow you to test various focal lengths in a controlled and comfortable setting.

Eye and head positioning

Adapting to progressive lenses involves precisely positioning your eyes and head for near, intermediate, and distance vision.

For near vision tasks like reading, lower your gaze, not your head, towards the bottom section of the lenses.

This part of the lens is designed for close-up work, and using just your eyes to shift focus ensures you utilize the correct zone.

For intermediate vision, such as when working on a computer screen or looking at something at arm’s length, aim to look straight ahead through the middle part of the lenses.

This requires a slight adjustment in eye level without significant head movement, aligning your gaze with the intermediate zone of the lenses.

When focusing on distance vision, like watching television or driving, it’s important to look through the upper part of the lenses.

Lift your gaze slightly while keeping your head in a natural, upright position. This aligns your eyes with the top section of the lenses, which is optimized for far distances.

Don't switch between your new and old pair

When you start wearing progressive lenses, it’s important that you do not switch between your old and new glasses.

Consistency is vital for achieving clear vision and adjusting to the new visual dynamics.

The more you wear your new glasses, the faster your eyes and brain will adjust to the new lenses, leading to clearer and more comfortable vision.

Incorporate visual exercises into your daily routine to accelerate this adjustment.

Regularly practice focusing on objects at varying distances to train your eyes and achieve optimal vision correction.

DID YOU KNOW?

Progressive lenses were invented in 1959 by Bernard Maitenaz and have revolutionized vision correction, offering a seamless transition between multiple vision fields in a single lens.

A woman with her eyes closed is pinching the bridge of her nose over her glasses, possibly indicating stress or a headache.

Common issues with wearing progressive glasses

One frequently encountered issue is a sensation of eye strain and slight dizziness, particularly when your peripheral vision seems distorted.

This is a result of the varying lens powers in progressive lenses, which can alter your perception as you move your eyes away from the lens’s center.

Adapting to changes in depth perception is another common challenge. In the early stages, activities that require depth judgment, like walking down stairs or stepping off curbs, may feel disorienting.

It’s important to approach these activities with caution, take your time to transition, and avoid situations where misjudging distance could be hazardous.

If adjustment difficulties persist beyond a few weeks, a consultation with your eye doctor is advisable.

They can check the fit and prescription of your lenses to ensure they are properly optimized for your specific vision needs.

Wearing progressive lenses

Embracing progressive lenses can open up a new world of clear and seamless vision. With the right approach and a bit of patience, you’ll soon enjoy the full benefits of your new lenses.

There’s nothing worse than having dry, itchy or irritated eyes.

Luckily, one way to get easy and quick relief in the comfort of your home is a warm compress.

They’ve long been used as a home remedy because the compress provides moisture and heat to your eyes, relieving the symptoms of mild conditions like itchiness, irritation, swelling, and dry eye, among others.

What can I use a warm compress for?

So, what is a warm compress? It can be moist or dry, typically a cloth or heat pad, that you place over your eyes to ease your discomfort.

There are various mild eye conditions that warm compresses may be used for, such as:

DID YOU KNOW?

Applying a warm compress to your eyes is great for relaxation! It can help relax your muscles leaving you feeling soothed and calm.

Types of compresses

There are two main types of warm compresses: dry and moist.

A dry compress is achieved using a heating pad, or a hot-water bottle. Whereas, a moist compress requires using a wet towel or washcloth in warm water.

Both types deliver heat, however moist compresses have been found to be more effective in relieving pain and providing faster relief than dry ones.

Nonetheless, if you need a convenient fix that requires zero cleanup, a dry compress can still provide some relief.

Benefits of a warm compress on your eyes

Now that you know what a warm compress is, here are some of the benefits that it can provide:

  • Adds moisture: moisture can open up the oil glands to improve their function which helps your eyes with normal tear production.
  • Prevent oils from clogging: when the oil glands aren’t working properly and become clogged, it can result in blepharitis, sties, or cysts. The moist heat can clear the obstructed glands and normalize oil flow to the eyes.
  • Relieves pain: a warm compress provides quick relief by stimulating healing in the area.
  • Eye muscle spasms: the moist heat can help relax the muscles in your eye.

How to make a warm compress for your eyes

Making warm compresses at home is simple and requires few resources.

  • Fill a clean bowl with warm clean water. This can be done using the warm water from the tap, or heating it in the microwave. The temperature should be between warm and comfortably hot.
  • Soak a clean washcloth in the warm water until it’s fully soaked through.
  • Remove the washcloth and wring out all of the excess water.
  • Fold the washcloth in half or until it is a size that sits comfortable over your eyes.
  • Leave the cloth on your eyes for a few minutes or until it gets cold.
  • Repeat steps 2-5 for no longer than 10-15 minutes for optimal results. Excessive time can dry out your skin.

Note if you have any infection or discharge from the eye, please change the water in between to avoid further spread of infection.

Remember: the water should never be too hot as it can cause injury to your eye area!

Are warm compresses safe for your eyes?

Warm compresses are safe, as long as you are careful.

The main issue that can arise is the washcloth being too hot which can cause injury. The temperature of the water should never be uncomfortable or inflict pain.

Furthermore, warm compresses are not ideal to use on a fresh injury, especially near open wounds.

A cold compress may be more beneficial in this case, to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.

Lastly, frequent use can dry out the skin around your eyes. Though it is not dangerous, it could leave your skin feeling uncomfortable.

Warm compress to treat dry eye

One of the main conditions a warm compress is used to relieve dry eye syndrome.

Did you know that about 40% of adults suffer from varying degrees of dry eye conditions?

Dry eye is the result of the inability to produce high quality or sufficient amounts of tears to lubricate the eyes.

There are many causes of dry eye syndrome such as age, allergies, lack of sleep, contact lenses, air pollutants, and medications.

Dry eye symptoms

There are several dry eye symptoms you may experience, including:

  • Excessive tearing
  • Blurry vision
  • Redness
  • Gritty sensation
  • Stinging or burning
  • Light sensitivity

A compress may relieve these dry eye symptoms as it will add moisture and heat to help tear production and clear the meibomian glands.

The increased blood flow can also alleviate pain and swelling.

This is one remedy among many, others may involve making dietary or environmental changes or prescription eye drops.

Remember, it’s important to consult an eye expert immediately if remedies do not work, or worsen your symptoms.

When to seek professional help

Using an eye compress can provide quick relief at home, though it may not be what’s best for you if your symptoms are more severe.

Your eye doctor will be able to give you the appropriate medical advice for your specific situation.

If you notice any of the following, contact your eye doctor:

  • Symptoms worsening
  • Persistent burning or stinging
  • Blurry vision, even with your glasses
  • Severe eye dryness that affects your daily life
  • Headaches or migraines

Eyelash mites are microscopic parasites that inhabit human hair follicles. While they may sound scary, they’re not as bad as you think.
eyelash mites

Have you ever heard of eyelash mites? They may sound like a cross between a horror movie villain and an unexpected house guest, but these tiny critters are not as scary as they seem.

A natural part of the human microbiome, these minuscule creatures can usually coexist without causing any harm.

What are eyelash mites?

Eyelash mites, scientifically known as Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis, are microscopic parasites that inhabit human hair follicles, particularly in the eyelash area.

Demodex folliculorum is the most common type of mite and lives within hair follicles on human skin. They are mostly found on the face and are most prevalent around the eyes.

Demodex brevis is another kind of mite found on humans. These mites are so small they cannot be seen with a naked eye.

They only become noticeable and cause reactions or problems if they are present in large quantities.

While all they want to do is feed on dead skin cells, when their population grows, and more eyelash mites are present, it can lead to various eye-related issues and discomfort.

Understanding the symptoms, causes, treatments, and prevention methods associated with eyelash mites is crucial for avoiding eye and skin problems.

What causes eyelash mites?

The human body is home to many microorganisms, and eyelash mites are one of them.

Generally, their presence in small quantities can be beneficial as these microscopic mites feed on dead skin and help by removing excess oil and ridding the body of dead skin cells.

The exact cause of an eyelash mite infestation is not always clear, but factors that might contribute to their proliferation include:

  • Poor hygiene: inadequate cleaning of the eyelids and face can allow mites to thrive.
  • Oil gland irregularities: overproduction of oil in the eyelid glands can create an environment conducive to mite growth.
  • Weak immune system: individuals with compromised immune systems may be more susceptible to mite infestations.
  • Age: mite populations tend to increase with age, as the body’s ability to control their numbers may decrease.
  • Skin conditions: those with dry or flakey skin, or rosacea, are prone to also have eyelash mites.

Eyelash mites are contagious and can be passed on through close contact with someone who has them. The affected person may have adult mites or larvae that can spread from person to person.

They can also be passed through mascara or other eye makeup, cosmetic tools, and face towels, so avoid sharing these items.

DID YOU KNOW?

The name Demodex is derived from Greek δημός (dēmos) ‘fat’ and δήξ (dēx) ‘woodworm’.

Symptoms of eyelash mites

The presence of eyelash mites might not always produce noticeable symptoms.

When severe infestations occur and too many eyelash mites are present around the eyelash follicles, symptoms may then occur.

Some of the common symptoms of eyelash mite infestations include:

  • Itching: persistent itching around the eyelashes is a common symptom caused by the movement of the mites.
  • Redness: increased redness and inflammation of the eyelids.
  • Burning sensation: some individuals may experience burning or stinging in the eye area.
  • Crust formation: crust or debris formation at the base of the eyelashes, particularly upon waking up.
  • Eyelash loss: excessive loss or thinning of eyelashes due to mite activity.

If you are experiencing uncomfortable symptoms and suspect an eyelash mite outbreak, you should see your eye doctor immediately.

How to treat eyelash mites

It’s essential to approach the treatment of eyelash mite infestations cautiously.

Abrasive or harsh cleaning methods can irritate the eyes, so it’s best to consult with your eye doctor to ensure an appropriate and effective approach to managing eyelash mite infestations.

The treatment for an eyelash mite infestation typically involves a combination of hygiene practices and, in some cases, medicated solutions prescribed by a healthcare professional.

For a mild infestation, healthcare providers might prescribe medicated cleansers or scrubs formulated to eliminate mites and their eggs. These products are designed to target the mites without irritating the eyes.

In the case of a severe infestation or risk of secondary infections due to mite activity, an optometrist may perform a deep cleaning of the eyelids.

They might also prescribe antibiotics or other medications to address any infections.

Always follow the advice and treatment plan recommended by your eye doctor. They can provide personalized guidance and medications tailored to your specific situation.

How to prevent eyelash mites

Preventing eyelash mite outbreaks involves several key practices. Maintaining good hygiene is the first step.

Regularly clean your eyelids and face using a mild cleanser. Do not share products like face towels or eye makeup and tools, as this can spread mites.

Washing your bedding regularly can also reduce the risk of an eyelash mite infestation. Clean pillowcases and bed sheets minimize the risk of mite transfer.

While eyelash mites are common, an overpopulation of these microscopic organisms can lead to discomfort and eye-related issues.

Regular hygiene practices, medical intervention when necessary, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are critical steps in managing and preventing complications arising from eyelash mite infections.

5 Styles to Wear for International Cinema Day

International Cinema Day falls on the 28th of December this year. The timing ties in nicely with the annual raft of movies released over the holiday period, and of course, the Christmas gift-giving tradition.

Cinema has a rich history of trendsetting and rendering styles iconic, be that in the form of hairdos, clothing, footwear, or even glasses

If you’ve still got a few names to tick off your Christmas shopping list and are stuck for ideas, or maybe you just feel like treating yourself to a new pair of shades, you could do a lot worse than choosing one of the following film-inspired styles.

Pilot shapes

One of, if not the most recognisable sunglasses shapes out there, pilot glasses have a long and storied history. Initially developed for US Air Force pilots, the Ray-Ban Aviator is the best-selling sunglasses model of all time.

Its universal appeal inspired a whole host of imitations from other brands. The style had already been around for about 50 years when it received a big popularity boost in the 1980s after starring in one of the decade’s biggest blockbusters.

In a film about two all-American fighter pilots, the costume department had an easy time finding the perfect eyewear for the protagonist.

Round metal frames

Round metal frames are one of the easiest ways to give your look a scholarly update. A classic design, there’s an almost universally shared perception of circular lenses held in place by thin metal rims; studious, bookish, and academic.

They also have a certain “young boy who’s discovered that he comes from a long line of wizards and has magical powers” kind of vibe to them.

If you’d rather channel your inner “Italian hitman living in New York who befriends a recently orphaned girl and helps her avenge the murder of her parents”, then opt for black-tinted lenses.

Square and suave

Equally as classic as their round counterparts, square glasses have been a style mainstay for decades and exude class, professionalism, and intelligence.

Their simplicity also gives them an everyman quality, so nobody will doubt for a second that you’re a mere journalist at a local newspaper, and not a crime-fighting superhero from another planet.

Just as long as you take them off when changing into your blue jumpsuit and red cape.

Cat-eye chic

Cat-eye frames were designed in the 1930s to give women a chance to express their femininity through their eyewear. There was a dearth of feminine options at the time, so Altina Schinasi set about creating the striking new shape with its signature upsweep.

The cat-eye grew in popularity, hitting its peak in the 50s and 60s and becoming the toast of Tinseltown, ubiquitous on film sets, the red carpet, and industry parties alike. A surefire way to add some nostalgic, cinematic glamor to any look.

Angular modernity

Film characters often resonate with us because they’ve got roughly two hours of our undivided attention, in which they charm us, show us their human flaws and redeeming qualities, and, quite often, save the day.

While it’s unlikely that you’ll have the same kind of opportunity to wow an adoring public, you can still grab people’s attention by standing out from the crowd. Geometric frames are great for this. Their angular form contrasts sharply against more conventional, historical shapes.

And for now, they haven’t yet been ingrained in cinema lore and eternally associated with any particular character, so why not get ahead of the curve and start wearing them before everyone else does?

The world of film is a fantastic source of style inspiration. The chances are, if you’ve ever spotted a pair of shades on-screen that took your fancy, you’ll find them – or something very similar – among our vast selection of eyeglasses and sunglasses. Start browsing now and see for yourself!
