Take Flight with the Best Aviator Style Frames

Take Flight with the Best Aviator Style Frames

Initially designed for military pilots in the 1930s, aviator sunglasses have become the epitome of cool in our modern age.

The best aviator sunglasses balance form and function, and they now come with advanced lens technology to ensure optimal eye protection.

Let’s find out why pilot sunglasses have stood the test of time.

What do aviator-style frames look like?

The aviator shape, with its teardrop lenses, is very distinctive. Designed to offer excellent coverage from both glare and harmful UV rays from the sun, this shape protects pilots’ eyes at high altitudes.

Classic aviator-style frames often have a brow bar, which adds strength and sometimes a more masculine touch—although stylish aviators are also available for women.

They’re also versatile, as they look good on a wide range of faces. That said, they best complement high cheekbones and triangular face shapes, balancing out those features.

Key features of the best aviator glasses

When choosing your aviator sunglasses, these are the features to look out for:

Polarized lenses

If you plan to wear your aviator frames as sunglasses, you’ll probably need polarized lenses. Polarized sunglasses reduce glare from bright light and make outdoor activities like flying, driving, or sitting on the beach much more pleasant.

However, if depth perception is a factor, such as when hiking on uneven trails, you might be better off with other sunglasses lens types. When choosing your aviator frames, you’ll be able to pick the right lenses for your needs.

UV protection

Harmful UV rays can significantly damage your eyes immediately and in the long term. To prevent this, ensure your aviator sunglasses offer 100% UV protection, shielding your eyes from UVA and UVB rays.

Quality lens and frame materials

The best lens quality offers you both superior optical performance and durability. Depending on the style you pick, you may also be able to choose your lens color.

Gray and green are very popular: while gray lenses offer great color perception, green lenses tend to enhance contrast.

When it comes to frames, look for lightweight, high-quality materials. Titanium and acetate frames are very durable and come in many different colors.

A secure fit

The best aviator-style frames should offer a snug fit. Make sure you check the size and pick the right one for you.

You’ll find measurements for the lenses and nose bridge, as well as the length of the arms to the temple tips, either on the glasses themselves or on the supplier’s website.

Then, you can use the adjustable nose pads to fine-tune further and achieve your perfect fit.

The best aviator-style frames

If you’re looking for inspiration, here are our favorite aviator styles.

These gold David Beckham sunglasses have a distinctive style that’s easy to imagine on the soccer star’s face. The extended and slightly rounded brow bar is masculine yet elegant, and the gray gradient lenses add both intrigue and sun protection.

David Beckham sunglasses

These Lenny Kravitz X Reverse sunglasses are unisex and feature a very defined teardrop shape. They come with stylish silver metal frames and silver mirror lenses. These aviators evoke classic Ray-Ban Aviators while being extremely up-to-date.

Versace aviator sunglasses

Tom Ford Falconer

For something uber-masculine, try these Tom Ford Falconer Frames. Their extra-large size suits a wider face, and their chunky, black plastic frames and yellow lenses make a real statement.

Brand Spotlight: Vogue Eyewear

Brand Spotlight: Vogue Eyewear

Eyewear has long been a staple everyday accessory that combines style with practicality, and Vogue Eyewear stands out among the many eyewear brands.

The brand recently celebrated its 50th birthday, and over the years, it has significantly impacted the eyewear scene.

Whether you’re looking for the latest trends or a more classic vibe, Vogue eyewear has you covered. Read on to learn more about its history, and why you should make Vogue Eyewear your next shopping destination—new glasses, here we come!

From the beginning: the Vogue eyewear journey

Vogue Eyewear is Vogue’s eyewear brand.

Launched in 1973 in Florence, Italy, Vogue Eyewear broke into the fashion world with iconic oversized shapes, neutral tones, and classic faded lenses inspired by the ever-glamorous picks of Vogue editors.

In the 1980s, they started experimenting with different materials and more unisex shapes. In the 1990s, they entered their supermodel era, characterized by sleek shapes that aligned with the high-end fashion preferences of the time.

In the 2000s, the brand underwent a major change: it joined forces with Luxottica, the largest eyewear company in the world. This allowed the company to expand its reach and ramp up its production and marketing efforts.

Thanks to the latter, in the last decade, the brand has teamed up with some incredible ambassadors, including some of the most prominent actresses and supermodels.

In 2023, Vogue Eyewear celebrated its 50th birthday. Throughout these 50 years, its designs have never stagnated and feature both innovative new designs and more classical models that return to its roots.

The brand scales new heights each year with celebrity partnerships and trendsetting releases. One thing’s for sure: you’ll never be short of options when exploring Vogue Eyewear.

Their collections have consistently inspired people worldwide, including supermodels, actors, fashion-savvy people, and now you.

The brand’s ethos? Eyewear is the finishing touch that completes your look, enhances your style, and is never just an afterthought.

Why we love Vogue Eyewear

Vogue Eyewear skillfully combines excellent craftsmanship with incredible creativity. With hundreds of styles to discover, there are frames for everyone.

Browsing through their collections, you’re sure to find the perfect pair to complement both your style and features.

While design is essential, it’s not the only reason Vogue Eyewear frames resonate deeply. Sustainability is a hot topic, and the brand has reacted accordingly by reducing its environmental impact by using eco-friendly materials in its frames and packaging.

Vogue Eyewear collections also transcend the seasons. Whether it’s fall or spring, it’s easy to style your favorite frames throughout the year.

This means you don’t have to keep buying new frames, which is good news for your bank balance and the environment.

And that’s not the only thing that makes these frames affordable. With prices starting at just $50, there are glasses to fit most budgets – you don’t have to break the bank to purchase a new pair of frames. What’s not to love about that?

Brand Spotlight: Guess

Guess may have started with a single pair of jeans, but its founders had much bigger plans—and Paul, Georges, Armand, and Maurice Marciano have made their mark.

Guess is now a fashion brand known worldwide for its seductive marketing campaigns, which flaunt a youthful and adventurous Southern California attitude.

It’s been quite a journey from where the story began, so let’s explore the history of this innovative brand.

The Marciano brothers go into business

The Marciano brothers grew up in Marseille, France, where they learned about business in their family clothing stores on the French Riviera. In 1977, they decided to move to the US due to the political changes taking place in France.

Guess was founded in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. It started with a book of styles but quickly expanded its signature line of denim clothing. Designed by Georges and made with lightweight, stone-washed fabric, Guess jeans fit like a glove.

Each brother had a role in the company. Maurice was responsible for product development, inspiring the company’s rapid expansion, while Armand handled distribution, customer relations, and retail operations.

Paul Marciano, in turn, headed the marketing department and honed the brand’s image, creating all the advertising in-house.

The first successful Guess jeans product was the Marilyn jeans. True to form, this was so close-fitting that it needed three zippers – one normal one at the fly plus two at the ankles.

The Guess marketing strategy

Guess’ advertising campaigns made history. The brand focused on deliberately alluring yet elegant images of women in jeans and very little else. The sexy cut spoke for itself and gained the attention of the nation.

The campaigns blended Hollywood glamor with a contemporary, independent spirit. They featured famous names, unknown models, and were so successful that many of their photographers’ careers skyrocketed to fame.

Guess products were sold at the company’s Beverly Hills store and several high-end department stores, including Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bergdorf Goodman.

Sales rocketed to $6 million in the first year, primarily due to their innovative marketing strategy.

Guess grows fast

In 1982, Guess launched a menswear line, and with further expansion plans in mind, the company needed to raise money. The Marcianos sold a 50% share of Guess to the Nakash brothers, who owned Jordache.

An already established clothier, Jordache had clothing manufacturing plants in Hong Kong.

This collaboration didn’t work out as planned, and as a result, the Marcianos eventually took the company back completely.

Despite the challenging relationship, Guess clothing continued to sell well, and sales were further boosted in 1985 by the movie Back to the Future, in which Marty McFly wore Guess’s denim clothing.

man wearing Guess eyeglasses

In 1990, the brothers devised the idea of creating licensing agreements with other companies, such as Revlon.

Soon, customers could purchase jewelry, perfume, knitwear, legwear, footwear, and eyewear, all of which carried the Guess brand but were manufactured by other businesses. These agreements generated substantial royalties for Guess.

Guess goes public

The company went public in 1996, but Guess continued to be controlled by the family.

By 1998, Guess products were selling in more than 70 countries, although most of its stores were in the US and Canada. In 1999, it went virtual with its first online store.

In the 2000s, competition in the clothing market began to increase dramatically, and Guess’ sales slumped.

This lead the Marciano brothers to hire Carlos Alberini as Chief Operating Officer, allowing a non-family member into the inner circle for the first time.

Alberini’s considerable expertise helped steer the company through this challenging time, and five years later, Guess launched Guess for Women, Guess for Men and Guess Kids.

Guess now

Nowadays, Guess offers a wide range of products, including apparel for men, women, and children – and, of course, their iconic jeans. It also sells handbags, wallets, travel bags, fragrances, shoes, and accessories.

With an online store and over 1,500 retail stores, the Guess brand offers a discerning customer an entry point into high-end clothing. The products are chic, on-trend, and well-made.

The Marcianos split

Over the decades, the Marciano brothers gradually began to step away from Guess. Inc. Georges was the first to leave in 1993 and sold his share to his brothers. Armand left 10 years later.

Maurice drastically reduced his role in 2007 to focus on building his wine estate, leaving Paul to run the company. In 2015, Paul finally handed over his CEO position, and Carlos Alberini now runs Guess.

Still owned by Maurice and Paul, the Guess story continues, and its future will undoubtedly be as interesting as its past.

Guess eyewear

The sexy, fashion-forward style of Guess is also present in their eyewear line. Guess glasses are stylish yet affordable, with sophisticated glamor and a hint of rebellion.

woman wearing Guess eyeglasses

If you look carefully, you’ll spot vintage influences in the frames’ silhouettes, combined with modern, quality materials, from glossy plastic to sleek metal. You’ll also find a range of interesting frame shapes in a choice of full-rim, semi-rimless, or rimless styles.

Do you fancy some geometric glasses? A chunky frame in bold colors IS a real statement piece that turns heads. Or you could choose a delicate and understated pair with polished accents and an elegant edge.

For a more playful look, funky patterned cat-eyes might catch your fancy. Or go more subtle with two-tone options that flatter your face. And if you really want your glasses to stand out, the oversized range may just be what you’re looking for.

guess eyeglasses

If possible, Guess sunglasses offer even more choices, including different color lenses, from the usual gray or brown right through to purple or yellow, and a wide range of mirrored lenses.

Stefano Gabbana, on the other hand, was raised in Milan, one of the world’s fashion capitals. Gabbana worked in graphic design, and this background brought modern creativity to the table.

Buying Guide: The Best Frame Colors for Blue Eyes

The Best Frame Colors for Blue Eyes

Blue eyes are hard to forget, and the right frame colors can make them even more memorable.

That said, just because a frame is stylish doesn’t mean it’s ideal for this eye color. Some frame colors complement or contrast blue eyes better than others, highlighting their natural beauty.

If you’re proud of your blue eyes, consider these things when purchasing eyewear so that they can shine.

The best glasses for blue eyes and your skin tone

The best frame color for blue eyes tends to be complementary or cooler in tone, regardless of whether you have fair skin, olive skin, or a darker tone.

When choosing glasses for blue eyes, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Gray, silver, and shades of blue are great complementary frame colors for blue eyes. These colors also work well with just about any hair color.
  • You can contrast blue eyes with warm colors like amber, copper, champagne, and tortoise.
  • A bold way to highlight blue eyes is by wearing glasses that come in deep purple or black. That said, black frames may sometimes create too much contrast, drawing attention away from the eyes.
  • Warm tones like red, yellow, pink, and orange can clash or overpower blue eyes, so it’s better to avoid them. The same is true for neon colors.
  • Muted browns are other colors that may overshadow or wash out blue eyes. Dark brown can work, though it may depend on the rest of your outfit.

As you can see, there are plenty of options. These are our favorites, but remember that if they’re not your style, there will always be more to browse.

Available in transparent Yankees blue, these cat-eye plastic frames for women feature a catchy geometric design that draws attention to the eyes.

Tom Ford FT5951-B Blue-Light Block 092

The tapering temples and golden detailing at the hinges add a playful touch to a design that stands out from any angle. This style can be especially inspired for blue eyes in lighter shades, as they won’t overpower the transparent blue.

Next, a pair of men’s full rim square frames from one of the biggest fashion houses in the world. Made from injected plastic, these vibrant dark blue Gucci frames go great with oval or round face shapes.

Gucci GG1573O 004

If you like using eyewear to add color to your outfit, this pair of eyeglasses can achieve that in style. And since we’re talking about Gucci, you can expect excellent craftsmanship and a build quality that stands the test of time.

With this pair of oval tortoiseshell frames, French designer Isabel Marant brings laid-back elegance with a bohemian touch to eyewear.

Isabel Marant IM 0086 086

Manufactured by Safilo, these acetate full-rim eyeglasses capture the spirit of the timeless color pattern in a graceful design that looks and feels lightweight. They’re great for heart, round, oval, and square faces.

Make a statement with these acetate clear silver eyeglasses from BOSS– they’re the perfect pair if you’re looking for neutral undertones.

These frames capture key elements of the German brand’s aesthetic, including clean lines, understated design, subtle luxury, and sophistication.

BOSS 1481 SRJ

They exude confidence and incorporate a minimalist but durable temple design, making them well-suited to both formal and informal outfits.

Whether you’re gearing up for a big presentation at work or just need a new pair of everyday specs, this model offers the timeless, understated luxury BOSS is known for.

This pair of rectangle metal eyeglasses from Zeiss has a beautiful matte gunmetal finish, which complements different shades of blue eyes.

Zeiss ZS22400 070

The rim is light-colored, but the temples are darker, adding contrast and extra weight to an otherwise streamlined design.

Metal frames are among the most durable, and this pair from Zeiss is no exception. You can wear it at work, home, and everywhere else, always with the quiet confidence that comes with a classic design.

Blue eyes, brown eyes, green eyes– new glasses for all eye colors

Wearing stylish frames is a great way to accentuate your blue eyes, though the same holds true for all eye colors.

Whether you have green eyes, brown eyes, black eyes, hazel eyes, or amber eyes, you’ll find a wide variety of frames to choose from.

Explore all the designer eyeglasses in our store and try the ones you like best with our Virtual Try-On. We’re sure you’ll find your perfect pick.

Why Sunglasses for Kids Are Just as Important as Sunscreen

Why Sunglasses for Kids Are Just as Important as Sunscreen

By SmartBuyGlasses Editorial Team

Kids showing their sunglasses

Generally, kids tend to spend a lot more time outdoors than adults. Be it during recess, at the beach, or in the snow, kids love to have fun, and what better than an outside adventure?

Funnily enough, we rarely see them wearing sunglasses. But should they?

Read on to discover how wearing sunglasses can make all the difference to your child’s eye health.

Why kids should wear sunglasses

As an adult, you know that just as sunscreen protects your skin, sunglasses protect your eyes from the harmful effects of the sun. Now consider that a child’s body is still developing and is far more vulnerable to the sun’s rays than an adult’s.

a kid wearing sunglasses

Children need protective eyewear for several reasons.

Protection from UV rays

The sun emits ultraviolet light (UV light), which can penetrate a child’s eye lens more easily than an adult’s. This puts children at a higher risk of permanent damage from the sun.

A child’s eyelids and the skin around their eyes are also more vulnerable to UV damage, both directly from the sun’s harmful rays and from UV rays reflected off surfaces.

Sure, they might not worry about eye damage or preserving a youthful appearance now, but better to start early than one day wake up with regrets.

To prevent this, look for a high-quality pair of sunglasses for kids that offers full UV protection from UVA and UVB rays.

Protection from glare

Even on cloudier days, the sun’s bright light reflects off light-colored surfaces like beach sand, water, and snow.

This intense light creates an uncomfortable glare that can result in blurred vision and snow blindness, especially in children who already suffer from light sensitivity. This is true for both short-term and long-term exposure to these environments.

Proper sunglasses for kids reduce glare, ensure better vision, and help them avoid headaches. For extra protection, kids’ sunglasses often come with polarized lenses.

So now you know the answer to the question, “Should kids wear sunglasses?” (Yes, definitely).

Where to find the best sunglasses for kids

You’ll find sunglasses for kids at many different retailers. However, when purchasing sunglasses, remember that you’re not just buying them for style (even if they think so).

You’re mainly looking for health benefits, so always check that they’re quality sunglasses with glare and UV protection.

You can also check out our range of designer sunglasses for kids, which are stylish and durable and come in many different shapes and colors.

You can filter for your child’s age range, any sports they’re involved in, and the lens type they need, amongst other things.

Pro Tip: To make sure they wear them, encourage your kids to help you choose the sunglasses. Our Virtual Try-On tool is a fun way to do this that can get them excited about their new shades.

When their new pair of sunglasses arrives on your doorstep, you’ll know you’ve done everything possible to protect your child’s eyes.
